MANSI is AIF’s low-cost award winning community-focused health intervention program that addresses the inequities in accessing quality and affordable health care for mothers and newborns among the vulnerable population in India.

MANSI works with the Government to strengthen public health services and engages with vulnerable communities like tribals, rural, and hard-to-reach to help them make informed choices about their health. Specifically, MANSI focuses on:
The Program focuses on building capacities of frontline health workers in the early identification and management of high-risk conditions among pregnant and nursing, newborn and under-5 children. This includes appropriate home-based care and timely referral to health institutions.
The program aims to eliminate undernutrition among children and anaemia among adolescent girls, and pregnant and nursing mothers through nutrition counseling, improving dietary diversity and strengthening nutrition services provided in the public sector.
The interventions among adolescents empower adolescent girls to make decisions related to their sexual reproductive health including menstrual hygiene, contraception, and gender equity through the interactive session for school-going and out-of-school-going girls in the age group of 10-19, also ensuring access to adolescent health services.
In partnership with EDME Insurance Brokers Limited, AIF is working to prevent cervical cancer among adolescent girls aged 10–14 by facilitating HPV vaccinations—the most effective protection against this leading cause of the disease. The initiative will reach 1,250 girls from vulnerable and marginalized communities across government schools in Mumbai, in close coordination with government authorities.
AIF has been in partnership with the Vivek and Vandana Sharma Foundation since 2020 for MAHI (MANSI Adolescent Health Initiative) in Uttarakhand. The partnership covers Yamkeshwar, Dwarikhar, and Dugadda blocks of district Pauri Garhwal. Covering a population of 1,87,938 the program has benefitted more than 6000 adolescent girls in 602 villages. The partnership focuses on key issues faced by adolescent girls including under-nutrition, anemia, and issues related to menstruation and menstrual hygiene and aims to provide them with essential health education and training.
Gita Iyer & Vijay Vishwanath has been supporting Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) case management in the Thalisain block of Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand since 2021. Thanks to his support, we have reached 4,098 under-five children and have trained 77 ASHAs in 161 villages of Thalisain Block. The project is focused on reducing preventable deaths due to acute and Severe Malnutrition and improving health outcomes in young children.
Madhepura Electric Locomotive Pvt. Ltd. (Alstom) has collaborated with AIFT to reduce the prevalence of anemia among approximately 4,000 adolescent girls in Madhepura, Bihar.
HUL and AIF have been working in partnership since 2021 for Prabhat Poshan Sathi, covering 11 blocks in Sumerpur and Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, Chhindwara District of Madhya Pradesh, and Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu. The program focuses on enhancing the nutritional status of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, and under-five children. This partnership has benefitted more than 4 lakh people in 524 villages across these three states.
CoH is supporting MANSI snce 2018. Under this partnership, we have reached beneficiaries in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. This partnership focuses on enhancing the nutritional status of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, and under-five children and training 1521 Frontline Workers (ASHA, ASHA facilitators, and Anganwadi workers) on HBYC (Home Base Care for Young Child).
The TATA Steel Foundation (TSF) has been supporting MASNI since its inception and is an implementing partner in the Kohan region of Jharkhand covering all 38 development blocks across the three districts of East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela. TSF provides human resource, finance, and program support in the field including joint advocacy with government functionaries on system strengthening. The TSF covers a population of approximately 4 million and reaches out to over 448,000 beneficiaries including pregnant and lactating women, children under-five, and adolescent girls in these five blocks and has provided training and handholding support to 2,399 ASHAs.
AIF and Village Development Society (VDS) have been in partnership since 2017. VDS is the existing implementation partner of MANSI in the state of Uttarakhand for the Narsan and Laksar blocks of the Haridwar District and in Yamkeshwar, Dugadda, Dwarikhal blocks of the Pauri Garhwal district. Covering a total population of around 8 lakhs, VDS has helped us reach more than 38,000 beneficiaries including pregnant & lactating women, children under-five, and adolescent girls in these five blocks as well as train and support 478 ASHA workers.

The project reaches out to a population of approximately 5 million and with a direct impact on 448,000 beneficiaries including pregnant and lactating women, children under-five, and adolescent girls in these 38 blocks and has provided training and handholding support to 2,399 ASHAs.
AIFs have signed MOU with the state government of Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, and Uttarakhand. MANSI has been coordinating with the state and district health officials and receiving their support in utilizing the existing Health Systems for the reduction of maternal and child mortalities through systems strengthening, capacity building of frontline workers, and community engagement. MANSI, through state and district government support, has reached out to over 8 million people in the states of Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
Supporting the MANSI program is a cost-effective and sustainable way to reduce preventable maternal and child deaths. The unit cost of intervention is as low as half a US dollar per person per year.
2 children die in India every minute and over 1.3 million women have died in India due to maternal causes over the last two decades. All because of lack to access to proper healthcare, nutrition, and information regarding prenatal, post-natal, and neonatal care.

New Delhi, Delhi, India – The American India Foundation, catalyzing social and economic change in India for the past 23 years, organized its annual public health knowledge event – ‘Swasthya Samvaad’ at The Park, in New Delhi this week. Cantered around cross-learning, collaboration, and collective action, Swasthya Samvaad drove a seminal discourse to cogitate and enhance health outcomes for the world’s largest adolescent population. With access and awareness as cornerstones, the event explored cross-disciplinary strategies in the realm of mental health, anemia, malnutrition, and sexual and reproductive health, amongst others, for adolescents.
December 9, 2022, Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, India: Women & Child Development Dept., Govt. of Madhya Pradesh has signed an MoU with the American India Foundation (AIF) to implement SAMAGRA – an Integrated Program for Children, to collaboratively improve nutrition and promote early childhood education (ECE) for 10,000 children in the preschool age group of 0 – 6 yrs. in the Gyaraspur block of the Vidisha district.
December 1, 2022, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India: Women & Child Development Dept., Govt. of Odisha has signed an MoU with the American India Foundation (AIF) to implement an Integrated Program for Children to collaboratively alleviate undernutrition, promote early childhood education (ECE), and improve the mental health of 10,000 children in the preschool age group and 12,000 children in the 11-15 years age range in the Thakurmunda & Gopabandhu Nagar Blocks of Mayurbhanj District.
